Inventory of the Heart - Part 5

“It’s All About Me”

It’s all about me! What an ugly, self-serving statement to make! Most of us are repulsed by those who would toot their own horn or sing their own praises, but how often do Christians do the same thing but in a more sophisticated manner?

Let’s take a closer inventory of our heart ……

1. Do you take the slightest credit for anything good about you? One of the things I remember my father telling me as I was growing up was, “Don’t take seriously anything that is said, that is nice about you.” For a Christian, this life we are living is not to be about us. “For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” Col. 3:3 Are you more concerned about God receiving the glory from your life or are you concerned about receiving recognition and credit for what you do? Why are you doing what you are doing? Is it important to you that your talent be noticed by others?

2. Do you talk of what you have done, rather than of what Christ has done? Self absorption is a cancer in our culture. Everyone wants to be noticed, remembered and credited for any little thing they do. We live in a very narcissistic society. Pride makes people think that others are as interested in them as they are in themselves. Do you exalt the LORD in your conversation? Is Christ given credit for any accomplishment that you may attain? Let someone else notice your accomplishment and then in humility, turn it back to the LORD. Without Him…we are nothing anyway! Proverbs 27:2 “Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth, a stranger, and not thine own lips.”

Self praise is carnal and very unbecoming for a child of God.

3. Are your statements mostly about “I”? Try keeping track of how many times per day that you say the word “I”. We all might be surprised how much of our lives are filled with selfish thinking.

4. Are your feelings easily hurt? When life is all about us…our feelings will be hurt on a regular basis. A life lived for self cannot tolerate or put up with slights or offences.  When our feelings are easily hurt, we reveal the lack of a forgiving spirit. A woman who is living her life under the control of the Spirit of God will not be offended at every turn. She already recognizes the truth of Romans 7:18, “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing;…”

What is the real problem here? No peace with God!

Psalm 119:165 “Great peace have they which love thy law; and nothing shall offend them.” When our life is all about Him, there is no space for harboring offenses.

5. Have you made a pretense of being something that you really are not? Ladies, lets all take a good look in God’s mirror. Do you see His reflection or do you see your own? The likeness of Christ is unmistakable in the life of a blood bought, dead to self, child of God. Our feelings will not be what drives us. Being noticed for service or accomplishments won’t matter at all. When our life is all about Him, we will happily serve Him, genuinely love others, put up with slights, surrender the preeminence and walk in humility…for Jesus sake. What a happy, peaceful place to exist!

I Corinthians 10:31 “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”

Is your life truly all about Him?

So good! I feel I need daily reminding of these truths. The Lord recently showed me the self-centeredness that was in my own heart. I feel like Paul in Rom. 7:21-25. So thankful for His patience and longsuffering with me!
